NASHVILLE, TN. – A synonym for libero is sweeper. Tennessee State libero Gina Rivera-Ortiz, is living up to her position by sweeping up records left and right for the Tennessee State University volleyball team. This past Saturday, she added another honor to her resume when she became the single season leader in digs. Garcia-Ortiz surpassed Madison Halterman during her 33-dig effort in the five set victory over the University of Southern Indiana. Last season, she shattered the career dig record and now sits at 2,452 for her career. “Gina is as hard nosed as it gets,” said head coach Donika Sutton. “She believes every ball is hers and goes after it with tenacity. She is the best athlete that I have ever coached. She has made her mark in this conference. She is respected by her teammates, and opponents.”
The Tigers will finish out the regular season this Friday and Saturday with home games against Little Rock. On Friday, Johanna Alcantara, Carla Boudal, Sofia Garcia-Guerrios, Rivera-Ortiz Aleksandra Rojecka, and Alondra Santana-Rodriguez will all be honored in this year’s Senior Night celebration.
